Roddy Shines vs. Dolphins

Roddy White and the Atlanta Falcons first team offense played pretty well vs the Dolphins on Friday night. Roddy caught 6 balls for 47 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan in the first quarter. The Falcons went on to win the game by a final score of 16-6.

As we mentioned, the 3rd preseason game is the most important. Roddy played into the third quarter and exited the game healthy. He likely won’t get much (if any) playing time in the 4th preseason game. The Falcons know what they have in him and will use that time to work with players on the bubble.

Roddy has been solid this preseason and is poised to have a big 2010 season.

Falcons head to Miami for Preseason Week 3

The Atlanta Falcons have a 7:00 kickoff vs. the Miami Dolphins on Friday night. The weather says scattered thunderstorms, but they’ll probably be good by game time. The third preseason game is always the game where the starters play the most. I expect Roddy White to play almost 3 full quarters.

He hasn’t seen much action in the first two games, so I’d like to see Matt Ryan throw 6-7 balls his way – resulting in 5 receptions. I’d really like to see Roddy score a touchdown. The Dolphins have a decent defense … they allowed 234 yards passing per game in 2009, but they don’t have a cornerback that can lineup opposite of Roddy.

White Records Two Catches vs. Patriots

Roddy White and the Atlanta Falcons played the New England Patriots last night – they lost 28-10, but no one really cares. Roddy White started the game and played into the second quarter. He recorded two catches for 26 yards, including a long of 17. I believe he was targeted 3 times total, but the first pass from Ryan was incomplete.

I know a lot of you might be started fantasy football drafts this weekend and I would say Roddy White should be one of the top 5 WRs taken off the board. He has looked good in preseason, has a quarterback going into his 3rd year and isn’t hindered at all by injuries. If you’re drafting this weekend, take him with confidence… if you still have a few more weeks until your draft then be sure to watch the Falcons third preseason game to see how he plays. White should play well into the 3rd quarter.

Roddy White In Action vs. KC

The Atlanta Falcons wrapped up their preseason opener vs. Kansas City with 20-10 victory. Roddy White was in action vs. the Chiefs but didn’t see much playing time. He caught one ball from Matt Ryan for 22 yards during the second quarter.

Matt Ryan and Roddy White have great on field chemistry – they will hook up for a lot of yards and plenty of scores this season. Don’t be surprise if Roddy sniffs 100 receptions this year.

The Falcons are back in action this week so we’ll be sure to bring you a Preseason Game 2 preview in the coming days. I expect Roddy White to play through the first half and get a few more looks from Ryan.

Roddy White Interview with Jay Glazer

Jay Glazer stopped at Atlanta Falcons training camp this week and sat down with wide receiver Roddy White for an interview. Jay and Roddy get into what’s good about training camp and what’s bad about being at camp. He talks about his relationship with Matt Ryan and their expectations for the season.

The interview starts at 0:48 and runs about four minutes long.

“They Are Dominating Us”

Atlanta Falcons training camp is just a few days in and star wide receiver Roddy White is already getting worked by a much improved Falcons defense. “They have been dominating us,” Pro Bowl wide receiver Roddy White said. “We’ve been struggling. They are active and are making plays out there.”

Coach Mike Smith is known for his defensive mind – he built some very strong defenses in Jacksonville before he was hired to be the head coach of Atlanta.

“This is our third year going into the system, and I thought we’d come out here and dominate, but the defense is doing a good job,” White said. “They are stepping things up.” White believes the offense will answer the challenge. “It’s not discouraging, just real interesting,” White said. “They are making us work very hard for everything, and that’s good.”

I believe White too. Atlanta is going to be a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball.

Roddy White Was At Vick’s Party

Last week, Michael Vick’s name surfaced (again) with some negative news surrounding it. Someone was shot and killed at a strip club just hours (or minutes, allegedly) Roddy White and friends were celebrating Vick’s birthday.

From Rotoworld:

White was at Vick’s birthday party and has stated that he left long before the shooting. The problem is that Vick said the same thing, but video has surfaced with him leaving just a few minutes before the shooting. White is going to have to put his friendship with Vick aside and be completely truthful here.

Roddy White is likely going to be summoned by Commissioner Roger Goodell to answer questions about what went down that night.

Haven’t we learned this 1,000 times now – nothing good comes from being at a strip club at 3:00 in the morning! Hope Roddy stays out of trouble.

Roddy White Top 5?

Dawson Devitt of the AJC wrote a tremendous article asking the question: Is Roddy White a Top Five Receiver? He takes an in depth look at Roddy’s start, his stats and compares them to other WRs in the NFL.

Despite his 11 touchdowns in 2009 (3rd most among WRs), Roddy still didn’t crack the top 5. He’s Top 10 for sure, but it will take a little bit more to pass guys like Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne, Vincent Jackson and Brandon Marshall.

What do you think? Where would you rank Roddy White?

White Working On Improving YAC

Just read an article on the AJC about Roddy White working in OTAs and minicamp on improving his yards after catch ability. Compared to other Pro Bowl WRs, Roddy White is about average at 4.6 YAC. Miles Austin and Greg Jennings were the only two WRs with over 7.0 YAC.

“We can do a lot more of that,” White said. “We are going to have to do a lot more of that. We have to break some more tackles, pick up some third downs and move the chains.”

Roddy White can work on his moves and route running during training camp. If he can create more space and get open then he’ll have a better chance at running after the catch. Matt Ryan has the arm and football IQ to lead receivers – they just have to do it.

“YAC can just get us more possessions,” White said. “That’s our big thing because we want to be out there on the field as much as possible and try to eat the clock and score some more touchdowns.”

How many times do you see a WR catch the ball and come up 1 yard short of the first down. That’s what Roddy is talking about – working on the skills needed to pick up that extra 1 yard and extend possessions.

Roddy White Wrapping Up Minicamp

The Atlanta Falcons wrapped up their first minicamp last week. All reports out of camp and head coach Mike Smith are that the Falcons like what they see so far in 2010. The Falcons are no doubt looking to build on their back to back winning seasons and make a playoff push. WR Roddy White will be a huge key in their success, without White the passing game would be horrific.

Roddy White was at Falcons minicamp, kicking it as usual. Here are a few pics:
